Colossians

Introduction

The Epistle to the Colossians is a powerful, structurally rich letter written by Sha'ul (Paul) and Timotheos (Timothy) to the kedoshim (set-apart ones) and faithful brothers residing in the ancient city of Colossae. Brought to them originally through the ministry of Epaphras, the assembly is commended for their vibrant faith, love, and hope. Writing from physical confinement ("Remember my chains"), Sha'ul pens this letter to combat deceptive local philosophies and establish the absolute supremacy and all-sufficiency of Yeshua HaMashiach.

Key Themes and Overview

The Preeminence and Supremacy of Mashiach: At the heart of the letter is a majestic declaration of who Yeshua is. He is described as the visible image of the invisible Elohim, the firstborn of all creation, and the creator of all things visible and invisible. All fullness dwells in Him, and He is the ultimate head of the body, the kehillah (assembly).
Sufficiency vs. Human Philosophy: Sha'ul issues an urgent warning to the Colossians not to be taken captive by human traditions, "vain deceit," or ascetic decrees like "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle". He asserts that since the full measure of the Elohim-head dwells bodily in Mashiach, believers are entirely complete in Him and do not need man-made religious systems or the worship of angels to achieve holiness.
The Mystery Revealed: Sha'ul unpacks the sod (mystery) that was hidden from past ages but is now revealed to the set-apart ones: "Mashiach in you, the tikvah of kavod" (the hope of glory). His ultimate goal is to present every single person shalem (complete) in Mashiach.
The New Man and Earthly Relationships: Because believers have been raised with Mashiach, they are instructed to set their minds on things above and put to death their old, fleshly ways. They are exhorted to put on the "new man" characterized by mercy, humility, and love. This spiritual renewal translates into practical daily life, reshaping how wives, husbands, children, parents, servants, and masters treat one another.
Cross-Congregational Fellowship: The letter underscores strong connections between early assemblies. Sha'ul outlines instructions for this iggeret (letter) to be read to the neighboring community in Laodicea, while demanding that the Colossians read the letter coming from Laodicea.

Chapter 1 The Cosmic HaMashiach and the Mystery of the Besorah

1 Sha'ul, a shaliach (apostle/emissary) of Yeshua HaMashiach, by the will of Elohim, and Timotheos our brother,
2 To the kedoshim (set-apart ones) and faithful achim (brothers) in Mashiach Yeshua who are in Colossae:
3 Chesed (grace) to you and shalom from Elohim Avinu (our Father), and from the Master Yeshua HaMashiach. We give thanks to Elohim, the Father of our Master Yeshua HaMashiach, always making tefillah (prayer) for you,
4 Having heard of your emunah (faith) in Mashiach Yeshua, and the ahavah (love) which you have toward all the kedoshim,
5 Because of the tikvah (hope) laid up for you in the shamayim (heavens), which you heard in the word of the truth of the Besorah (Good News),
6 Which has come to you, as it is in all the olam (world), bearing fruit and growing, just as it does in you, since the day you heard and knew the chesed of Elohim in truth.
7 As you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow eved (servant), who is for you a faithful shamash (minister) of Mashiach Yeshua,
8 Who also declared to us your ahavah in the Ruach (Spirit).
9 Therefore, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to make tefillah for you, asking that you may be filled with da’at (knowledge) of His ratzon (will) in all chochmah (wisdom) and binah (understanding) in the Ruach:
10 That you may walk worthily of Adonai, pleasing Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the da’at of Elohim;
11 Strengthened with all gevurah (might), according to the power of His kavod (glory), in all patience and endurance with simchah (joy),
12 Giving thanks to Avinu (the Father), who has made us fit to share in the inheritance of the kedoshim in the light;
13 Who has delivered us from the authority of choshech (darkness), and transferred us into the malchut (kingdom) of the Son of His ahavah,
14 In whom we have geulah (redemption) through His dahm (blood), the forgiveness of chata’im (sins);
15 Who is the tzelem (image) of the invisible Elohim, the firstborn of all creation;
16 For by Him were all things created, in the shamayim and on the aretz (earth), visible and invisible, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities: all things were created through Him and for Him.
17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
18 And He is the head of the body, the kehillah (assembly), who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He might have preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell in Him,
20 And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, making shalom through the dahm of His execution stake, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
21 And you, who were once alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works,
22 Yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you kedoshim, blameless, and without reproach before Him,
23 If indeed you continue in the emunah, grounded and steadfast, not moved away from the tikvah of the Besorah which you heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, of which I, Sha'ul, became a shamash.
24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is lacking of the afflictions of Mashiach, for the sake of His body, which is the kehillah:
25 Of which I became a shamash according to the stewardship of Elohim given to me for you, to fulfill the word of Elohim,
26 The sod (mystery) hidden from ages and generations, but now revealed to His kedoshim,
27 To whom Elohim willed to make known the riches of the kavod of this sod among the nations, which is Mashiach in you, the tikvah of kavod.
28 Him we proclaim, warning every man and teaching every man in all chochmah, that we may present every man shalem (complete) in Mashiach Yeshua.
29 For this I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me with power.

Chapter 2 Spiritual Completeness vs. Vain Philosophies and Human Decrees

1 For I would have you know what great concern I have for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,
2 That their levavot (hearts) may be encouraged, being knit together in ahavah (love), and unto all riches of the fullness of binah (understanding), to the da’at (knowledge) of the sod (mystery) of Elohim, even the Father, and of Mashiach Yeshua,
3 In whom are hidden all the treasures of chochmah (wisdom) and da’at.
4 And this I say, lest anyone deceive you with persuasive words.
5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in the Ruach, rejoicing and beholding your order and the steadfastness of your emunah (faith) in Mashiach.
6 As therefore you have received Yeshua HaMashiach Adon, so walk in Him,
7 Rooted and built up in Him, and established in the emunah, as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest anyone spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the traditions of men, according to the elementary principles of the olam (world), and not according to Mashiach.
9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Elohim-head bodily.
10 And you are complete in Him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
11 In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision not made by hands, in putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Mashiach,
12 Buried with Him in mikveh (immersion), in which you also were raised with Him through emunah in the working of Elohim, who raised Him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made alive together with Him, forgiving you all transgressions,
14 Blotting out the handwriting of decrees against us, which was contrary to us. He took it out of the way, nailing it to the execution stake.
15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in Himself.
16 Therefore let no one judge you in food or in drink, or in respect of a moed (festival), or of the new moon, or of the Shabbatot (Sabbaths),
17 Which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Mashiach.
18 Let no one defraud you of your reward, delighting in false humility and worship of malachim (angels), intruding into things he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
19 And not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase of Elohim.
20 If you died with Mashiach from the elementary principles of the olam, why, as though living in the olam, do you submit to decrees—
21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle”—
22 Which all perish with use, according to the commandments and teachings of men?
23 These things indeed have an appearance of chochmah (wisdom) in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against indulgence of the flesh.

Chapter 3 Putting on the New Man and Transforming the Household

1 Therefore, if you were raised with Mashiach, seek the things that are above, where Mashiach is seated at the right hand of Elohim.
2 Set your minds on the things above, not on the things of the aretz (earth).
3 For you have died, and your chayim (life) is hidden with Mashiach in Elohim.
4 When Mashiach, who is your chayim, appears, then you also will appear with Him in kavod (glory).
5 Put to death therefore your members which are upon the aretz: fornication, uncleanness, lust, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
6 Because of these things the wrath of Elohim comes upon the sons of disobedience,
7 In which you also once walked, when you lived in them.
8 But now, put away all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your mouth.
9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
10 And have put on the new man, who is being renewed in da’at (knowledge) according to the tzelem (image) of Him who created him.
11 Where there is neither Yehudi (Jew) nor Goy (Gentile), circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian nor Scythian, slave nor free; but Mashiach is all, and in all.
12 Put on therefore, as the chosen of Elohim, kedoshim and beloved, hearts of mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, patience,
13 Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; just as Adon has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
14 And above all these things put on ahavah (love), which is the bond of shlemut (perfection).
15 And let the shalom of Mashiach rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
16 Let the word of Mashiach dwell richly in you, in all chochmah (wisdom); teaching and admonishing one another in mizmorim (psalms), shirot (hymns), and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to Elohim.
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the Name of Adon Yeshua HaMashiach, giving thanks to Elohim the Father through Him.
18 Nashim (wives), submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in Adon.
19 Ba’alei (husbands), love your wives, and do not be bitter against them.
20 Banim (children), obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to Adon.
21 Avot (fathers), do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
22 Avadim (servants), obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing Elohim.
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to Adon, and not to men,
24 Knowing that from Adon you will receive the reward of the inheritance. Serve Adon Mashiach.
25 But he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality with Elohim.

Chapter 4 Walking in Wisdom and Final Apostolic Greetings

1 Adonim (masters), give to your avadim (servants) what is just and fair, knowing that you also have an Adon in the shamayim (heavens).
2 Continue steadfastly in tefillah (prayer), watching in it with thanksgiving.
3 At the same time, pray also for us, that Elohim may open to us a door for the word, to speak the sod (mystery) of Mashiach—for which I am also bound—
4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
5 Walk in chochmah (wisdom) toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
6 Let your speech always be with chesed (grace), seasoned with melach (salt), that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
7 All my affairs will be made known to you by Tychicus, our beloved ach (brother), faithful shamash (minister) and fellow eved (servant) in Adon.
8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your situation and comfort your levavot (hearts),
9 With Onesimus, the faithful and beloved ach, who is one of you. They will make known to you all things that are happening here.
10 Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, greets you, and Mark, the cousin of Bar-Nabba (Barnabas), concerning whom you received instructions—if he comes to you, receive him.
11 And Yeshua, who is called Justus, greets you. These are of the circumcision; they are my only fellow workers for the malchut (kingdom) of Elohim, and they have been a comfort to me.
12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Mashiach Yeshua, greets you, always laboring fervently for you in tefillot (prayers), that you may stand shalem (complete) and fully assured in all the ratzon (will) of Elohim.
13 For I bear him witness that he has great zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.
14 Luke, the beloved rofeh (physician), greets you, and Demas.
15 Greet the achim (brothers) in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the kehillah (assembly) that meets in his house.
16 And when this iggeret (letter) has been read among you, cause it to be read also in the kehillah of the Laodiceans, and you likewise read the one from Laodicea.
17 And say to Archippus: Take heed to the avodah (ministry) which you have received in Adon, that you fulfill it.
18 The greeting of Sha'ul with my own hand. Remember my chains. Chesed (grace) be with you. Amen.
