Introduction
The Second Epistle to Timotheos is the rawest, most poignant, and final letter written by Sha'ul (Paul) before his martyrdom. Confined inside a cold Roman prison ("in chains"), facing abandonment by former associates, and knowing the time of his death is imminent, Sha'ul writes this final testament to his spiritual son, Timotheos. Stripped of generic ecclesiastical instructions, this letter is a passionate, passing-of-the-torch charge to a young leader to endure suffering, preach the word, and guard the sacred truth at all costs.
Key Themes and Overview
Courage, Power, and the Holy Deposit: Aware of Timotheos' tears and potential intimidation, Sha'ul reminds him to fan into flame the spiritual gift within him. He delivers a timeless reminder that Elohim has not given believers a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. Timotheos is explicitly commanded never to be ashamed of the chains of his apostolic father, but to stand bold, holding fast to the pattern of sound words and guarding the good deposit of the gospel through the Ruach HaKodesh.
The Metaphors of Endurance: Sha'ul paints a vivid picture of the rigorous nature of ministry through three distinct vocations. Timotheos must endure hardship like a focused soldier who avoids worldly entanglements, an athlete who competes lawfully according to the rules, and a hard-working farmer who labors patiently before reaping the harvest. Sha'ul points to his own suffering as an example, reminding him that though men can be bound, the word of Elohim is never chained.
Approved Workmanship vs. Cancerous Deception: The young pastor is commanded to be a worker who does not need to be ashamed, "rightly dividing the word of truth" while shunning empty babblings and false teachings that spread like cancer. Sha'ul explicitly calls out heretics like Hymeneus and Philetus who overthrew the faith of some by falsely claiming the resurrection had already happened. Timotheos is instructed to cleanse himself from error to become a "vessel for honor, sanctified and useful to Adon."
Perilous Times and the All-Sufficiency of Scripture: Sha'ul provides a chilling portrait of human depravity in the acharit hayamim (last days), warning of self-absorbed, ungrateful, and cruel people who possess a mere form of godliness but deny its true power. As a shield against this encroaching darkness, Sha'ul points Timotheos back to the Kitvei HaKodesh (Holy Scriptures) he learned in childhood, forcefully stating that all Scripture is inspired by Elohim and profitable for teaching, correction, and training in tzedakah (righteousness).
The Dying Testimony and Final Charge: The letter culminates in a solemn, cosmic charge before Elohim and Yeshua HaMashiach to "Preach the word" relentlessly, regardless of whether it is well-received or out of season. In a beautiful and triumphant conclusion, the aging apostle reflects on his own life, declaring that he has fought the good fight, finished his race, and kept the faith, and now joyfully anticipates receiving his crown of righteousness from the Lord.
Chapter 1 Stirring up the Gift of Elohim and Guarding the Kadosh Calling
1
Sha'ul, a shaliach (apostle) of Yeshua HaMashiach, by the will of Elohim, according to the promise of chayim (life) which is in Mashiach Yeshua.
2
To Timotheos, my dearly beloved son: chesed (grace), rachamim (mercy), and shalom from Elohim Avinu (God the Father), and from Mashiach Yeshua our Adon.
3
I give thanks to Elohim, whom I serve from my forefathers with a pure conscience, that without ceasing I remember you in my tefillot (prayers) night and day,
4
Greatly desiring to see you, mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with simchah (joy),
5
Recalling the sincere emunah (faith) that is in you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
6
For this reason I remind you to stir up the gift of Elohim which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7
For Elohim has not given us a ruach (spirit) of fear, but of power, and of ahavah (love), and of self-control.
8
Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of Adon, nor of me His prisoner, but share in suffering for the Besorah (Good News) according to the power of Elohim,
9
Who has saved us and called us with a kadosh (holy) calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and chesed, which was given us in Mashiach Yeshua before time began,
10
But has now been revealed by the appearing of our Deliverer, Yeshua HaMashiach, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the Besorah.
11
To this I was appointed a preacher, a shaliach, and a teacher of the Goyim (Gentiles).
12
For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to guard what I have committed to Him until that day.
13
Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in emunah and ahavah which are in Mashiach Yeshua.
14
Guard the good deposit entrusted to you by the Ruach HaKodesh who dwells in us.
15
You know that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.
16
May Adon grant rachamim to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.
17
But when he came to Rome, he diligently sought me and found me.
18
May Adon grant to him that he may find rachamim from Adon in that day. And you know very well how many ways he ministered to me at Ephesos.
Chapter 2 Enduring Hardship as a Soldier of Mashiach and Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth
1
You therefore, my son, be strong in the chesed (grace) that is in Mashiach Yeshua.
2
And the things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
3
Endure hardship as a good soldier of Mashiach Yeshua.
4
No man serving as a soldier for Elohim entangles himself with the affairs of this olam (world), that he may please Him to whom he has pledged himself.
5
And also, if anyone competes, he is not crowned unless he competes lawfully.
6
The farmer who labors must be the first to partake of the fruits.
7
Consider what I say, for Adon will give you understanding in all things.
8
Remember that Adon Yeshua HaMashiach, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my Besorah (Good News).
9
For which I suffer hardship even to chains, as an evildoer; but the word of Elohim is not chained.
10
Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the yeshuah (salvation) which is in Mashiach Yeshua with eternal kavod (glory).
11
This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him.
12
If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.
13
If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
14
Remind them of these things, charging them before Adon not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to Elohim, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16
But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
17
And their message will spread like cancer; of whom are Hymeneus and Philetus,
18
Who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and they overthrow the emunah (faith) of some.
19
Nevertheless, the solid foundation of Elohim stands, having this seal: “Adon knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the Name of Adon depart from iniquity.”
20
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some for honor and some for dishonor.
21
Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful to Adon, prepared for every good work.
22
Flee also youthful lusts, but pursue tzedakah (justice), emunah, ahavah (love), and shalom with those who call on Adon out of a pure lev (heart).
23
But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
24
And a servant of Adon must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
25
In humility correcting those who oppose, if perhaps Elohim may grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,
26
And that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the satan, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
Chapter 3 Standing Firm in the Kitvei HaKodesh Amidst Perilous Last Days
1
Know this also, that in the acharit hayamim (last days) perilous times will come.
2
For men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked,
3
Without natural affection, without shalom, slanderers, without self-control, cruel, without kindness,
4
Traitors, stubborn, puffed up, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of Elohim,
5
Having a form of godliness but denying its power. From such turn away.
6
For of this sort are those who creep into houses and lead captive foolish women laden with sins, led away by various lusts,
7
Always learning and never able to come to the da'at (knowledge) of the truth.
8
Now as Yannes and Mamre opposed Moshe, so also these resist the truth—men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the emunah (faith).
9
But they shall progress no further, for their folly shall be manifest to all, as theirs also was.
10
But you have fully known my teaching, manner of life, purpose, emunah, longsuffering, ahavah (love), patience,
11
Persecutions, afflictions, which came upon me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—what persecutions I endured; and out of them all Adon delivered me.
12
Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Mashiach Yeshua shall suffer persecution.
13
But evil men and impostors shall grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14
But you, continue in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
15
And that from childhood you have known the Kitvei HaKodesh (Holy Scriptures), which are able to make you wise for yeshuah (salvation) through emunah which is in Mashiach Yeshua.
16
All Scripture is inspired by Elohim and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in tzedakah (righteousness),
17
That the ish haElohim (man of God) may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Chapter 4 Preaching the Word and Finishing the Race in Expectation of the Crown of Tzedakah
1
I charge you before Elohim and Yeshua HaMashiach, who shall judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His malchut (kingdom):
2
Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, exhort, rebuke with all patience and teaching.
3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound teaching, but according to their own lusts they will heap up for themselves teachers, having itching ears,
4
And they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.
5
But you, be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of a mevaser (evangelist), fulfill your ministry. Be sober.
6
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the emunah (faith).
8
Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of tzedakah (righteousness), which Adon, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing. Make haste to come to me quickly.
9
For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this olam (world), and has gone to Thessalonica;
10
Crescens to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
11
Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for the ministry.
12
And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesos.
13
The cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, bring when you come, and the scrolls, especially the parchments.
14
Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm; Adon will repay him according to his works.
15
You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words.
16
At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them.
17
But Adon stood with me and strengthened me, so that the proclamation might be fully made through me, and that all the Goyim (Gentiles) might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
18
And Adon will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly malchut. To Him be kavod (glory) forever and ever. Amen.
19
Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
20
Erastus stayed at Corinth, but Trophimus I left sick at Miletus.
21
Make haste to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the achim (brethren).
22
Adon Yeshua HaMashiach be with your ruach (spirit). Chesed (grace) be with you. Amen.
